My son is 4 1/2 years old. He LOVES this toy. His expectactions might be low b/c he does not expect it to act like a live dinosaur, but, it is the closest he has ever gotten to a live dinosaur. At 4 he can easily get it to rub his hand in friendly mode. He can change the moods and attack bad guys. Does not move on carpet.. slips at first on tile, but, picks up speed in gate. It will sense if you step beside it and bite in that direction or nuzzle. If you are expecting a live dino to do your hunting or only have carpet don't get it. If you have a kid with an imagination that loves dinosaurs that is not already over hyped by commercials (Face it.. they always look better on TV.. even action figures look like they are alive).. this is a great toy for the younger audience... my wife and I played with it a lot too. These reviews are way to rough on this toy. I think people expectations were almost comical for the price of the toy. If you are in rc hobbies and know the price of a good strong servo you will know that there is no way to load this thing up with high end high torque servos. Although.. it should walk better in carpet. Overall.. my kid has a new pet that he loves. That means I like it.

robo rapter is realy fun but some times he acts dumb like not moving. Over all its fun. You can make him sneeze it's pretty neat. He can walk and run but he can't go on all carpets. He goes the fastest on hard wood floors but he makes a annoying sound but I like it because it bugs my mom.
I like him!

The online reviews are mostly negative, but I have really enjoyed this robo-animal. My 6 year old son has wanted the Roboraptor (RR) ever since it came out. Maybe it was waiting 2 years to get it but, he loves this toy. I was sceptical at first but have become quite fond of this toy. I don't think RR is all that noisy, he's kind of grouchy and aggressive most of the time. He walks and runs better on tile floors than wood floors. The great part about RR is he munches on action figures and he roams around the house looking for more things to bite. I think those of you who were disappointed in him are way to "technical" or are too old; this toy still leaves alot to a child's imagination. In my book, this is really a fun toy!

Ok, enough of the "disapointed" reviews. Obviously many of these people expect way too much from a "toy". Granted the price does seem high, but good grief so is gasoline. I too am a bit of a "nerd" or "gadget freak". At first I was a little disapointed in the roboraptors functions, but I was determined to check out all its abilities. Does it walk? Absolutely! On carpet? Not well at all. I did notice that it would keep ramming its head into objects, but sometimes that was because it was a narrow object like a table, or chair leg. Sometimes it was the lighting. Reading the directions, I noticed that fluorescent lights can affect its ability to sense things. Quite so.
A big lesson I learned was that the "Free Roam" mode is the best by far. It will explore the room, and avoid obstacles as well. It went into a corner, between a desk, and the wall, and seemed to be stuck. I was tempted to pick it up and turn it around when I noticed it change direction, and literally worked its way out by constantly changing directions, and walking backwards and forwards. I was quite impressed. As I was busy reading the manual, I heard it roaring, and growling repeatedly, when I looked to see what was going on, it seemed to think my moccasin slippers were a threat somehow. That made me laugh.
As some other people have noted, it will do a great number of things, but if you use the remote to walk it around, and then it runs into something, or ignores something near it, don't be disapointed. In the "remote control" mode, (using the remote to make it do things), it will only do what you tell it to do, like run into walls.
A couple of years ago I purchased an Aibo from Sony. These are very expensive "robotic toys". I mean hundreds to thousands of dollars. One thing that many of the "less expensive robotic toys" do have a problem with is reactions to stimuli while moving. My aibo for instance will still run into things occasionally, and will usually not hear me calling it, or giving it an order. Trust me when I say the roboraptor is not far behind the technology of these very expensive "toys", so it is definitely worth $99.
If you are thinking of getting one, be realistic about the abilities, and take what you hear for a grain of salt. If you have one already, and are disapointed, please give it a chance, and try the "Free Roam" mode in good lighting, on smooth floors, and with fresh batteries. |

I've had my Roboraptor for almost two months now, and I have to say, I'm glad I got him! He does have 40 functions, I'm sure, but I haven't taken the time to count them yet. All three of his personalites are fun, especially Playful Mode. He wags his tail, nuzzles, "purrs", and plays tug-o-war if you touch the sensor on the roof of his mouth. I like to use a pencil or my finger. Yes, it's true the sensors are buttons; what else could they be? In playful mode, my Roboraptor loves to be scratched under the chin or rubbed on his tail. Don't try it in hunting mode, though! He HATES it! Another Mode I like is Roam. Roboraptor walks around the room and avoids obstacles. Please note that Roborapor can't look at obstacles that are below his 'nostrils'. Here's a little something for you to try the next time you put Roboraptor in Roam. If you put him in Playful Mode, he will act playful and make the same noises he does when he's happy. If you put him in Cautious Mode first, Roboraptor acts very timid and cautious as he explores. He's very quiet as well in this mode. In Hunting Mode, Roboraptor is very noisy and irritable he also roars at anything that moves. One more mode is "Guard". Roboraptor will stand still and guard whatever is in front or to either side of him. If he sees a movement or hears a noise, he will turn his head toward it and roar, stamp and growl. My brother has tried everything to get past it with no luck. If you do invest in a Roboraptor, it's best to get rechargeable AA batteries or else he'll go through alot. My Roboraptor does well on carpet but still has a little trouble backing up. Don't put him on a thick carpet or one of those carpets with loops in it or he will get stuck. Above all have fun, remember it's a toy not a super intelligent robot, and don't let anyone make him try to walk DOWN the stairs!
